Prospect Park Users: Thanks for the Road Diet, Now Let?s Make It Car-Free

Comparo: 2012 Hyundai Genesis Sedan vs. 2012 Chrysler 300S [w/video]

Battle Of The Budget-Friendly Full-Size RWD Luxury Sedans
2012 Chrysler 300 S vs 2012 Hyundai Genesis

The Hyundai Genesis Sedan and Chrysler 300S are much more alike than they are different.

Why compare a Hyundai to a Chrysler? At first glance, this matchup may seem rather preposterous, but a logical argument says this rivalry has been in place for more than a decade. In 2002, Chrysler and Hyundai were both offering full-size front-wheel-drive sedans. Hyundai had its XG350 fitted with a 194-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, while Chrysler was touting its Concorde with a 214-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 (each shared an EPA rating of 16 mpg city and 24 mpg highway). Not only were both remarkably similar on paper, but both sedans started at about $25,000.

Today, Hyundai and Chrysler remain in the full-size arena with products that are infinitely more interesting, significantly more powerful and immeasurably more engaging to drive - they also happen to be the only two rear-wheel-drive luxury sedans left in this price segment.

Sensing an interesting fight, we rounded up a 2012 Hyundai Genesis sedan and a 2012 Chrysler 300S for a driving comparison. After several hundred miles of city, canyon and highway had passed swiftly beneath their undercarriages, one clear winner had emerged.

Bill Ford Jr. outlines future of mobility at MWC

Between now and the middle of this century, analysts predict that the world's vehicle population will quadruple, going from around one billion today to four billion by 2050. To keep perpetual, global gridlock at bay and reduce consumption, automakers and communication providers have to team up, and that's exactly what Bill Ford Jr. proposed on Monday at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

Under the banner "Blueprint for Mobility," the great-grandson of Henry Ford detailed what it will take to make congestion-free motoring (or at least congestion-controlled) a reality in the coming decades, utilizing a combination of connected cars, connected roadways and a totally revamped mobile infrastructure.

"If we do nothing, we face the prospect of 'global gridlock', a never-ending traffic jam that wastes time, energy and resources and even compromises the flow of commerce and healthcare," Ford told the assembled masses in Spain.

Ford's proposal comes in three parts - near-term (5-7 years), mid-term (2017-2025) and long-term (2025 and beyond) - with the first part requiring the development and deployment of vehicle-to-vehicle warning systems, "limited autonomous functions" (think next-gen adaptive cruise control) and the expansion of car sharing programs like ZipCar.

Mid-term solutions range from semi-autonomous vehicles to new city car models that carry between one and three passengers, while long-term proposals include a range of intermodal transportation networks that combine individually owned cars with public transportation, fully autonomous vehicles and a constantly connected road network that uses vehicle-to-vehicle communication and road trains.

It's all ambitious stuff and echoes much of what we've heard from other automakers, including Audi, BMW and General Motors, who have all announced plans to move beyond being a standard automaker and instead become "mobility providers." Get the full details on Ford's proposal in the official release after the jump.

Official: Subaru tops Consumer Reports Automaker Report Cards

2012 Subaru Impreza

Report cards are headed home in automakers' backpacks today, and provided there isn't any grade-changing subterfuge, Subaru has managed to land itself atop the Consumer Reports dean's list. The triumph comes thanks to a class-topping essay entitled "What I Did Over Winter Break: Redesigning the 2012 Impreza," which earned the rugged brand top marks in Small Sedans 101. Combined with high scores in other vehicle classes, Subaru knocked Honda from the valedictorian's position it has held for the past four years.

Also passing Honda were salutatorian Mazda and perennial top-three performer Toyota, who reliably proved that whether it's the smartest kid in the class or not, it's well liked. Mazda climbed in the rankings thanks to a lighter class load, while Honda's drop from the top reflected a year spent drawing giant spaceships and hoping that in Civics class nobody would notice when it turned in a weak rewrite of it's own popular essay from last semester.

Honda wasn't alone in spending the grading period not paying attention. Also spotted wandering the halls was Ford, which dropped out of the top five. While Chrysler found itself with the worst grades in the class - again - the carmaker did see some results from hitting the books lately, earning it the title of second most improved behind Mazda.

Click past the jump to read the full press release.

Report: "Shocked" Brightwell drops Saab bid, blames GM intransigence

Saab emblem on hood with ice

Nearly three months on the Saab story is the same: company makes a bid, General Motors knocks it back. But this time, the latest round of corporate "He said/She said" puts Turkey's Brightwell Holdings on the other side of the table instead of a Chinese company. Brightwell was the other publicly identified bidder for Saab that pledged to make a bid, along with Chinese concern Youngman.

Brightwell blames GM "intransigence," a familiar epithet by now, has scuppered the possibility of a deal. GM says that's not the case, rather that a deal for Saab can't include any of the technology licensed from GM. Brightwell believed that that condition only applied to Chinese buyers, since GM's position that it didn't want to compete with another company using its intellectual property was always taken in reference to interest from companies like Youngman and Hawtei.

If GM's position is that it won't license its technology to anyone anywhere, that could alter the landscape for the six to 14 bidders rreported to be hovering over Saab's remains. Based on Youngman's last statements, it should still be in the mix, though: it pledged to make a bid for Saab that avoids GM-developed vehicles like the 9-5 and 9-4X and restarts the brand with the new 9-3 on Saab's Phoenix architecture.

Brightman hasn't ruled itself out completely yet. Having spent "millions of euros" on its bid, a firm partner said that if GM is open to discussions then he "will jump on a plane and visit them in Detroit."

Kanye West and Jay Z Maybach

The memory of Jay Z and Kanye West laying waste to a $350,000 Maybach for the duo's "Otis" music video continues to bring a smile to our face. We're always fans of the Mad Max treatment on any vehicle, and taking a Sawzall and a cutting torch to a ludicrously expensive luxury barge remains the stuff of our twisted fantasies. If you've been wondering what ever happened to the zombie Maybach, wonder no more. What's left of the 'Bach is officially headed to auction, with the proceeds going to Save The Children, a non-profit charity dedicated to improving the lives of children around the world. In this case, the auction will benefit families in East Africa.

How much will the cannibalized Maybach fetch once the gavel falls? Early estimates say bids could reach as high as $100,000, or less than a third of the vehicle's total value pre-Otisification. Worth it? Well, we certainly won't tell you how to spend your cash, but if you're a fan of hip hop royalty and/or Save The Children, we're inclined to think so. Hit the jump to check out the video for yourself.

Video: Nissan teases Hi-Cross Concept before Geneva debut

Nissan Hi-Cross

Nissan is headed to this year's Geneva Motor Show in March with a slew of concept vehicles. The company has let slip a teaser for one of those creations, complete with a quick video. The automaker calls the new vehicle the Hi-Cross Concept, and from the look and sound of things, we can expect to see a new high-riding hatchback roll onto the stage in Switzerland. Details aren't just scarce at the moment - they're entirely absent, which means we'll have to wait until the Hi-Cross receives its official debut at the show to learn more.

Nissan is also bringing along the Invitation Concept it showed off earlier this month. The pint-sized hatchback is designed to indicate exactly what the automaker has planned for its next small car. Like the Hi-Cross, Nissan has kept drivetrain details for the Invitation to itself for the time being.

Hit the jump for a look at the Hi-Cross teaser video.

Lexus LFA

We can attest to the joys of driving the Lexus LFA, having spent several days this past fall becoming addicted to the 4.8-liter V10 and race-bred suspension. We aren't the only ones who have developed an affection for the $400,000 Lexus supercar, though. Alex Wurz, former Formula 1 driver and two-time Le Mans winner, recently got behind the wheel of the LFA and seemed duly impressed.

Not one to just take the LFA out for a lazy drive, Wurz makes proper use of all 552 horsepower and 9,000 rpm running the Estoril Circuit in Portugal. After a few laps of pushing the supercar around the track, Wurz heaps praise on the LFA for its super-aggressive looks, neutral handling, and the sound of the downshifts from the V10.

If you want to see a video of the Lexus LFA being driven the way it was intended, then hit the jump and turn up your speakers.

2013 Ford Mustang Ad

Ford is launching a new commercial for the redesigned 2013 Mustang that will initially air during the Daytona 500 this weekend. This is the first time that the Blue Oval has promoted its pony car on television since it launched the new 2011 Mustang V6 in 2010.

Conventional marketing wisdom might dictate that Ford would use the airtime to promote the 2013 Mustang's revised design, the 420-horsepower V8 or the pony car's history of nearly half a decade. Instead, Ford is touting the personalization aspect of the Mustang, counting on the fact that more than four million people have already built their own version using the online Mustang customizer.

The commercial depicts a real-life version of the customizer, with a variety of bystanders "unleashing their inner Mustang," turning the car into a custom Mustang GT, Boss 302 or Shelby GT500... and at least one tiny dancer injecting a little darkness into her ballerina outfit for a ride worthy of Natalie Portman.

Have a look at the 2013 Mustang commercial for yourself after the jump, and let us know whether you think it's the most effective use of Ford's ad dollars in the comments section below.

Porsche 928

Porsche invested remarkably in the 928, introduced in 1978, planning for it to supersede the by-then 15-year-old 911. It had a transaxle to keep weight balance 50/50, an instrument binnacle that tilted with the steering wheel, sun visors for rear passengers, polyurethane bumpers that, compared to the chromed monstrosities of the day, actually maintained the car's lines, and some of the coolest pop-up headlights ever. It's front-mounted V8 with 297 horsepower got 82 more ponies than the Ferrari 308 GTB.

To sell the car to UK customers in 1980, though, Porsche put together an eight-minute clip that spent as much time on the innovations as it did on women shopping, golfing and driving through a lot of castle driveways.

If you're ready for "an impression of what motoring in its finest form is like" from the days when you could just "phone your local Porsche dealer, tell him you want a drive and he'll take care of the rest," there's a video for you after the jump.

Video: Ken Block goes over the river and through the 100 Acre Wood in latest rally video

block rally 100 acre

Rally racing is amazing to watch, and it's no doubt a blast from behind the wheel. But while we'd love some time behind the wheel of a genuine rally car, we're guessing that the sport is a lot harder than it looks. Then again, dirt racing looks really easy when Ken Block is behind the wheel.

Block and his seemingly ever-present camera crew hit the 100 Acre Wood course for some practice time before his attempt at a sixth consecutive victory, and the proof is in the video shown here. As you might've guessed, there is a lot of high-speed drifting of his Ford Fiesta, some gratuitous high-definition slow-motion awesomeness and some bonus Alex Gelsomino on the mic. Hit the jump to watch for yourself.

Report: Chrysler CEO votes for keeping Town & Country if minivans merge [w/poll]

Chrysler Town & Country - front three-quarter view

If you believe the gossip around Detroit, one of the Chrysler Group's minivan twins is fixin' to be killed. This is not news. In fact, it's now been over one year since we first reported that either the Chrysler Town & Country or Dodge Grand Caravan will likely get the axe by 2013. What's still unknown, however, is exactly which of the two minivans will be left standing after the vehicles merge into one Pentastar van.

"If we were to combine them into one minivan, Town & County has the natural fit to continue," Chrysler brand CEO Saad Chehab said while speaking to Automotive News, adding that the T&C is the "bread and butter" of his brand. "It's always been Town & Country that leads the way for the business of minivans, but there is a certain cache and there is loyalty that we've got to consider to move forward."

In 2010, the Chrysler Town & Country was the best-selling minivan in the United States. Things shifted in 2011, however, where the Dodge Grand Caravan outsold the Town & Country - 110,862 units to 94,320 - and both were bested by the Toyota Sienna in sales. We suspect it isn't just owner loyalty that Chrysler would be keen to maintain with the Town & Country - it's also priced higher and that presumably translates into bigger margins.

Until the next-generation Chrysler Group minivan launches in 2013, we won't know which of the two current minivans will get the axe, though earlier reports have stated that the one van could wear different badges, depending on the market. Still, one of America's minivans is going away, so sound off in our poll below to tell us which of the two nameplates you'd like to see stick around.

Video: Teenage Mustang wrecker gets his Tosh.0 Web Redemption

Mustang Kid on Tosh.0

If you managed to read that title without falling into the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" trap, congratulations. You aren't a child of the '80s. "Tosh.0" finally got around to giving Joey, the kid who drove his father's brand-new Ford Mustang GT500 through the back wall of the family garage, a Web Redemption. As it turns out, the story was far worse than anyone imagined. The GT500 didn't even belong to the family when the gung-ho teen sent it careening through the carpentry. Instead, the local dealer had simply brought the car by to show Joey's father.

Joey's dad wound up buying the Eleanor Edition Shelby for $60,000 and immediately had to sink another $30,000 into repairs. It's unclear whether that figure covered the bathroom Joey also took out in the crash. Ouch.

Daniel Tosh gave Joey his Web Redemption by putting him through a uniquely Californian driving test and pitting him against a too-fast, too-furious Honda S2000 in a unique street race. Hit the jump to check out the interview as well as an expanded and "uncensored" version. In reality, both videos are clearly Not Safe For Work.

Breaking: Range Rover Evoque Convertible leaks ahead of Geneva debut

Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible

While we're still waiting for official details, we have received confirmation from the blokes at Land Rover that the Range Rover Evoque Convertible you see above is the real deal, and it will debut at next month's 2012 Geneva Motor Show.

At this time, Land Rover is calling the roofless wonder a concept, though a production model seems likely at some point in the near future. Based on the three-door Evoque, the convertible model will offer seating for four and be billed as the world's first premium convertible SUV (sorry, Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet!).

Top Gear fans were some of the first to hear about the droptop Evoque when presenter Jeremy Clarkson used a pair of scissors to cut the roof off an Evoque during a news segment this week, but it took a while before the crafty Internet got around to leaking real images. See for yourself in the image gallery above, and stay tuned for official information as we draw ever closer to the Evoque Convertible's official debut.
